£1.2m development creates new homes for Granby


A £1.2m development of ten new high quality homes has been completed in Granby as part of a drive to provide quality, affordable homes in the area.

A £1.2m development of ten new high quality homes has been completed in Granby as part of a drive to provide quality, affordable homes in the area.

Developed by Liverpool-based housing association, Plus Dane Group, the new homes, a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership properties, were built following the demolition of long term empty properties on one side of Hatherley Street last year by Liverpool City Council.

As the Council’s housing association partner for the South of the city centre, Plus Dane Group worked with the council to develop plans for the new affordable homes on Hatherley Street and led the construction of the new properties, with grant support from the Homes and Communities Agency, TSC and the Group’s own investment. 

Residents of Hatherley Street’s existing homes have also been closely involved and given the first chance to purchase one of the new homes. Following support from the Council and Local HomeBuy Agent, HomesHub (part of Plus Dane Group), three homeowners living in Hatherley Street were able to buy one of the new properties through a unique deal which enables them to own a 50% share. 

To mark the completion of the scheme Councillor Anne O’Byrne met with one of the new homeowners, Nicola Thompson, who grew up on Hatherley Street and has lived in Granby all her life, to welcome her to her new home and view the difference that the project has made to the neighbourhood. 

Nicola commented: “I’ve lived in this neighbourhood all my life and these new homes have made a big difference. In my old property I couldn’t let my children play outside in the yard due to the back wall being unsafe and it was also very damp, so I’m delighted with our new home, which is spacious and warm and has space outside where my children can play safely, we’re all very happy here.” 

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, Councillor Ann O’Byrne, said: “This scheme is the latest success story for housing in Liverpool, providing high quality, affordable housing in an area that needs it most.

“It was fantastic to meet with local residents and see how excited they are about the new homes. This is what schemes like this are all about – partners working together to transform communities, drive up the quality of lives and deliver the type of homes people want.”

This is the second phase of development to be delivered for Hatherley Street, building on the 27 new homes built by Plus Dane on behalf of Steve Biko HA in an earlier phase. Claire Griffiths, Plus Dane’s Managing Director for Regeneration and Commercial Development (RCD), said:

“We are committed to increasing the supply and choice of quality, affordable homes for local people in this neighbourhood. At Hatherley Street we’ve provided real choice for people wanting to rent and those wanting to maintain their investment in the area as homeowners. It’s great to see families now moving in and enjoying their new homes.”

“We are working with Liverpool City Council and our partners to deliver more homes for people in this neighbourhood.” 

The £1.2m scheme received Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) funding of £658,000 and £343,000 investment from Plus Dane Group.
