Partners Plus Dane, contractor Southdale and Hugh Baird College have arranged for the learners to complete work experience sessions at Minstead Avenue, Kirkby where 66 new homes are currently under construction.
The nine students involved recently underwent an induction session on site. In pairs, they will each complete a week of work experience over five weeks.
They are all working towards their level 3 diploma in brickwork, but for many this is their first experience working on a live site. As most of the students will look to gain apprenticeships or go straight into employment when they finish their course, the work experience with Plus Dane and Southdale is really important.
Their lecturer, Martyn Pearson of Hugh Baird College said: “These full time students have all the technical ability but have never been on site before, so this will give them a valuable insight into the world of work as well as practical experience to put on their CVs. We are delighted to have a partnership with Plus Dane and Southdale that makes this kind of exciting opportunity possible for our students.
Site manager Mick Dunn said: “We were very pleased to be able to give the students an idea of what it is like to work on a real site. Over the course of their placement they will be assisting with general brickwork and gaining skills that they will be able to take forward into the future.”
The Minstead Avenue project, known as Quarry Brook, is due for completion this summer, and will include eight two bed-room bungalows and 58 two-storey two and three-bed room contemporary homes.
Ten of the homes will be available for shared ownership, while the remainder will be on offer for affordable rent.
Plus Dane strategy and partnerships manager Bridget Waters said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Southdale and Hugh Baird College to kick-start careers in construction for young people. We’ve had fantastic feedback about the attitude, ability and enthusiasm of this first group of students. We’re planning to develop further opportunities like this as part of our wider programme.”
Plus Dane Group has already delivered 25 new Code Level 3 homes at Quarryside Drive, Kirkby, winning the Knowsley Business & Regeneration Best Housing Scheme Award 2012.
