Cheshire MP Visits Ellesmere Port Cyber Centre

Westminster Community Centre welcomed the MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston ahead of Get Online Week which launched on October 12.

Justin Madders MP paid a visit to the local hub, on Church Parade, to find out more about the activities taking place in its Cyber Centre, dedicated to helping local people improve their digital skills.

The Cyber Centre is run by local resident Ashley Quirk, with special sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12pm to 4pm. As a UK Online Centre, it offers free access to personal computers and the internet, as well as offering support via the Learn My Way programme, which helps people search for information, look for work and book a doctor’s appointment, all for free.

Plus Dane Housing runs regular ‘iTea and Coffee’ drop in sessions, and the Westminster Work Club takes place Wednesday from 10am to 1pm, where the local community can get support and advice about gaining employment and training.

Running from October 12 to 18, Get Online Week is the year’s biggest digital inclusion campaign encouraging people to see how the internet can make almost anything in life a little easier.

It’s run by the Tinder Foundation which is a not for profit social enterprise that aims to make good things happen through digital technology.

Established in 2011, Tinder Foundation leads a network of 5,000 local community partners, and works with a variety of national organisations, to help hundreds of thousands of people every year to use the internet to improve their lives.

Cyber Centre manager Ashley Quirk said: “It was great to be able to show Justin Madders how important centres like ours can be to the community. The Cyber Centre is a local service that really meets a need for the people of Westminster on their doorstep. If people need help or advice with any aspect of computers and getting online, we are here to help.”

Toria Buzza, regeneration manager at Plus Dane Housing, said:

“We are delighted that Mr Madders came along to see the Cyber Centre and the activities on offer to support local people. Plus Dane is proud to work in partnership with the community and Get Online Week is a great way for people to improve their understanding of digital technology.”
