Work club opens in Runcorn

Locals offered freee training in how to use the web to search for jobs

A NEW service to help people find work and training is opening in Runcorn amid fears that local people are being left behind by the digital revolution.

The Castlefields Work Club will focus on helping people use the internet to take advantage of job opportunities, offering support on everything from searching for jobs and building up CVs to applying for grants and accessing further education.

Plus Dane neighbourhood engagement officer Jeff O’Carroll, who is co-organising the sessions with Jane Smith from LHT, said: "So many things – including job adverts and benefit payments - are moving on-line, so it is vital that people get to grips with the internet.

"These drop-in sessions will give people the chance to learn the skills they need to look for work on the web and access all the training and grant opportunities that are out there.

"It’s all about offering support in a friendly, non-pressured way so people can find out what employers are looking for, build their confidence and stay in touch."

The club, in Castlefields Community Centre, opens on Friday, January 25 and help will be available for anyone who drops-in from 1-3pm each Friday. Those who are interested are encouraged to attend the first session, which will outline all the help that is on offer.

It is estimated that some nine million people in the UK do not have access to the internet despite estimates that more than 75% of jobs require some familiarity with computer use.

Furthermore, from April this year benefits claims will start to move on-line, leading to fears that people who lack internet skills will lose their cash.

And according to the National Housing Federation, people who pay their bills through the internet can save on average £560 per year.

The support, which is all free of charge, is offered by staff from Neighbourhood investor Plus Dane Group, Liverpool Housing Trust, Riverside College, National Career Service and others.
