Work begins on Tanhouse regeneration

17th January 2020

Work has begun on a new development that will see 16 affordable rental homes built in Runcorn.

The derelict site in Tanhouse, including the former Old Transporter pub, has now been completely demolished to start the new build.

Plus Dane's plans for the new two-bedroom homes aim to regenerate the neighbourhood and create three new roles on site, including apprenticeships.

Development director Chris McAllister said: “It is absolutely fantastic to see work begin on these 16 new homes for Tanhouse. Although it has taken a long time to get to this stage, we have always been committed to regenerating this site and improving it for the benefit of existing residents. We’re looking forward to building attractive contemporary homes for local people and also to bring new people to the area. We look forward to seeing these homes completed and welcoming the first new tenants.”

Plus Dane has appointed John McCall Architects and ENGIE to deliver the design and construction of the new homes in accordance with our design and specification. Demolition began at the start of January, and the homes are scheduled for completion in spring 2021. Homes England have provided grant funding through its Affordable Homes Programme.

The Tanhouse site has been derelict for some years and the accommodation was previously bedsit-style flats. Plus Dane  needed to acquire the Old Transporter pub, which was privately owned, before work could go ahead on transforming the area and provide much-needed affordable housing in the neighbourhood.

Steven Gregory, Head of New Build at ENGIE, said: “We’re incredibly excited about this project and are pleased to already be on site and progressing this build. This scheme has been procured via one of our frameworks, which enabled us to fast track the project for Plus Dane and get started.

“These new homes will be a fantastic addition to Runcorn, and we look forward to working closely with our partners to provide employment opportunities for local residents and a modern neighbourhood to complement the regeneration of the local area.”

As part of this development, Plus Dane and ENGIE have worked together to offer employment and training opportunities for customers interested in construction. There will be an Open Day on Monday, March 9 from 11am to 1pm at The Community Shop at Priory House, Northway in Runcorn, offering the chance to find out more about Engie’s opportunities - which include CSCS and asbestos qualifications, and three full-time jobs working on the development. There will be guaranteed job interviews for any customers who successfully complete the training.

To find out more the training programme and job opportunities, please contact Plus Dane’s Engagement & Partnerships Team on 01260 288422.
